Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon have been training at Carrington all week and the new arrivals could be in Ruben Amorim’s thoughts when it comes to his team – whether as starting players or substitutes.
Cunha, who is United’s new no.10, said earlier this week that he was eagerly anticipating his maiden match: “I’m so excited to maybe go and then do everything that I want to do with the shirt and, of course, to go to the locker room and see [for] the first time the shirt there, [that] will be something then.
NEW THREADS FOR REDS
United’s adidas away kit for 2025/26 will be released on Wednesday 16 July, and the players will wear it for the first time at the Strawberry Arena. The design is being kept under wraps for now, but if the second-choice jersey is anything like this campaign’s home design, you can be sure that it will be a head-turner!
CHANCE TO SEE YOUNGSTERS
The first week of training included plenty of faces from the Reds’ talented Academy and, down the years, the opening match of pre-season has usually provided an opportunity to impress.
With the club’s internationals only reporting back to base on Thursday after the summer break, the meeting with Daniel Farke’s side could see Amorim field more of an experimental line-up than he would do closer to the start of term, when systems and formations are being firmed up before the competitive action begins.
A RIVALRY RENEWED
Meetings with our rivals from over the Pennines have been few and far between over the last two decades. The Whites were a Premier League side between 2020 and 2023, although our first two clashes had to take place behind closed doors, during the Covid-19 pandemic.
We put six past the Yorkshire outfit that season, and nine in total the following term, and these matches usually promise goals galore.
FOUR FIXTURES TO COME
MUTV is the only place where viewers outside of the United States can watch all five of our pre-season games live and in full.
Ruben Amorim could not have had a much worse first few months in the job, but now he has the summer to work on things.
His side will face top-flight opposition in Stockholm first, taking on newly-promoted Leeds in a tough clash.
Daniel Farke’s men won the Championship title last season to secure their spot back amongst the nation’s elite.
Why is Man United vs Leeds in Sweden?
While no official reason has been given, the Red Devils have regularly made pre-season trips to Scandinavia.
Man United have a rich connection in Sweden, with three players captaining the country’s national team during their careers.
This includes Henrik Larsson, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and current skipper, Victor Lindelof, who only left the club this summer as a free agent.
Old Trafford has also been the home for three other Swedes – 1999 Treble winner Jesper Blomqvist, plus Academy alumni Anthony Elanga and Bojan Djordjic.
United and Leeds also have a recent history of staging pre-season matches in Scandinavia, having played in Norway in 2015 and 2023.
Amorim’s men have history at the Strawberry Arena, last visiting the stadium in the 2017 UEFA Europa League final, where they downed Ajax 2-0 to lift the trophy for the first time in the club’s history.
Leeds, meanwhile, similarly boast strong Swedish support, with chief operating officer Morrie Eisenberg saying: “We know the great support we have in Scandinavia, with many supporters regularly travelling to England to see Leeds United play and LUSCOS (Leeds United Supporters Club of Scandinavia) have over 8,000 Members alone, so it will be a great occasion in July.”

It means Altay Bayindir is expected to start in goal.

Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Alejandro Garnacho are among multiple stars not taking part in United’s pre-season.
